to use this game on a trial basis only. You are free to pass on a copy to
other users as long as all files and documentation are supplied. Any other
user will also be granted a trial period of play. If after 30 days you wish to

10 pounds sterling (11 Pounds Outside The UK) to;
K-RAM Computers

When you register you will receive the enhanced version of the game. This
allows up to four human players to compete against each other played across
both divisions with relegation and promotion. Advanced features include a
tactics option where you choose your squad formation before each game. Various
levels of play can be selected, based on the starting strength of each squad.
The registered version also has a game save/load facility as it is a much
longer game with the target for the Premier division not being as easy to
reach as that of the First division. The match gate money also increases as
you are promoted to the premier but the player's wages also increase.
INTRODUCTION
------------
Welcome to the League Champions VGA soccer game. I wanted to write a
football game that was different from the usual management games, and that was
just fun to play and easy to get into. I blew the dust off a very old board
game that I developed back in 1979, and found that it could be easily converted
into a computer game. Whilst programming the game I have had to change the game
considerably, adding more player interaction as the original game involved the
drawing of various packs of cards. The computer now shuffles and deals these
cards leaving the player to concentrate on building up his squad. The object of
this version of the game is to become Division One champions. This is achieved
by finishing or remaining in first position after winning a match and to also
have over 1,000,000 in finances at the same time. Both of these conditions have
to be met. PLEASE NOTE That the premier division is not active in this
shareware version.
COMPUTER DELAY TIME
-------------------
When you first start each game you will be asked to choose the computer
delay length. This is a measure of time that the game pauses after each
computer player ends it's turn. Press the 1 key to toggle the different options
between KEYPRESS, SHORT, NORMAL and LONG. The KEYPRESS option will prompt you
to press a key each time the computer player ends the turn, this will speed the
game up and you will be able to read the computer messages at your own speed.
Pressing the 2 key will start the game with the desired setting. I found that
the normal option gave the best balanced game settings.
THE BOARD
---------
The board in split into forty squares containing various different
colours. Each colour corresponds to a different feature.
The YELLOW, GREEN, BLUE, and RED squares represent the four teams in the
game. You will play as the Yellow team and the computer will control the other
three teams. If you land on your own coloured square then you will collect a
sponsorship payment of 20,000 which is added to your balance. If you land on
any other colour then you will play a match against that team, where you are
playing at Home.
If you land on the GREY square then you will be in squad training. Here
you have the chance to improve one area of your team, either DEFENCE, MIDFIELD,
or ATTACK.
The BROWN square will automatically draw an EVENT CARD from the shuffled
pack. These can be either good or bad and can sometimes save or lose the game
for your team.
Landing on the BEIGE coloured square will give you access to the transfer
market. Here you will be able to buy players to improve your team or sell them
to increase your club balance.
The single DARK GREY square that you initially start from is the GOAL RACE
start and finish space.
All of the above squares are described fully in their appropriate sections
below, and as you play the game you will find it easy to remember which square
is which.
The tables in the centre on the board depict the teams league positions
and also how many goals have been scored on the current lap of the board. The
window in the top left on the centre section will show the current teams money
balance. Below this is the die which shows how many squares to move. The window
to the right of these show all the relevant messages as events happen. When it
is the turn of certain team then the graphic player figure in the lower right
of the screen will change to the colour of that team. This is also a good way
to keep track on which computer team is currently moving.
PLAYING A MATCH
---------------
When you land on an opposition's square then you are informed that a match
is to take place between the two teams. Press any key and you will be shown the
match display. Both of the teams statistics are compared and any modifications
are made to the score drawn from the card pack. The higher your statistics the
more chance you have of swinging the result in your favour. Press any key to
see the gate money that each team receives along with the deductions for the
player's wages. Remember that the home team's statistics, score, wages and gate
money are always the first set of figures followed by the away team's. The home
team is always the player that landed on the square, the away team being the
actual square colour. This means that you may well play games and score goals
even when it is not your turn.
The goals that both teams score will then be added to their totals in the
GOALS table as both squads attempt to win the goal race prize. You now press
any key to see the new league positions of the two teams. The display will
inform you as to which team changed position in the division and the counters
will be updated on the league table. There are no fixed amount of games that
your team will play as these are dependent on the board squares.
When two computer opponents play each other you will only see a single
match display screen which shows the score and the new position changes for
each squad.
TRAINING
--------
Landing on a LIGHT GREY square will put you into squad training. You will
have to train one area of your team, this being either DEFENCE, MIDFIELD, or
ATTACK. Press either 1, 2, or 3 as prompted on the screen, to choose which
section of your team you wish to improve. Each section can range from 1-9 in
strength, with 9 being the strongest setting. When training a statistic can go
either up or down, it is advisable to try and improve in the weakest area of
your game. After choosing the desired section you will be informed as to the
result. The table will show the new total statistics of the team with either a
+1, 0, or a -1 to signify the change in the chosen section. Training is
important for your team as each section has it's own benefits when playing a
match.
EVENT CARDS
-----------
The BROWN squares signify the drawing of an EVENT CARD. These are random
and can be both good and bad for the team. Some examples include the raising or
lowering of the squad statistics, receiving or paying out money etc. These
cards can dramatically change the games outcome whether your team be at the top
or bottom of the table.
THE TRANSFER MARKET
-------------------
The BEIGE square allows you access to the transfer market where you can
buy or sell players. The prices are always fluctuating so you can often get a
good deal. Your current team statistics will be displayed with the choices
available underneath. Make your choice by pressing either 1-Buy or 2-Sell, you
can press 3 if you wish to exit and make no transaction. You can then choose
which player to buy or sell, either 1-Defender, 2-Midfielder, or 3-Attacker,
you can also press 4 to exit the transfer market. Remember to keep account of
your money total as you may not be able to afford certain players. Buying
players will obviously increase your teams performance but it will also reduce
the money that you need to win the game. Selling is often useful when you are
high in the table and require more money to reach the 1,000,000 to become
LEAGUE CHAMPIONS.
THE GOAL RACE
-------------
The DARK GREY goal race square is always activated when you pass it. Any
goals that you have scored in the previous lap of the board are removed and
your total is reduced to zero. If you succeed in scoring twenty goals by
the time you reach the goal race square, then the league sponsors will pay
your team 200,000. This will be better achieved by having a good attacking
squad. The prize money will also be a great boost to winning the game.
WINNING THE GAME
----------------
The game is only won after a match has been played and all of the
conditions have been met. If you are first position in division one after a
match and you also have at least 1,000,000 in finances then you will become
LEAGUE CHAMPIONS.......GOOD LUCK..
